I do not know where they went, but it was a splendid act. They did not put up any resistance. I admired him for it.
I had finished with the lowering of the first boat from the port side. We then proceeded to boat No. 2 or No. 4 or No. 6; I do not know which it is called.
SENATOR SMITH: You had stepped into the boat to assist in lowering it?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Yes; and then got out of it again.
SENATOR SMITH: And you stepped out of it?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: I only got into the boat to assist in taking out the mast and the sail.
SENATOR SMITH: I understand. Then you got out again?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Then I got out again, and I assisted in putting the ladies into the boat. We then went to the next boat and we did the same thing — got the mast and the sail out of that. There was a quartermaster in the boat, and one sailor, and we commenced to put the ladies in that boat. After that boat had got a full complement of ladies, there were no more ladies to get in, or if there were any other ladies to get in they did not wish to do so, because we were calling out for them — that is, speaking of the port side — but some would not leave their husbands.
SENATOR SMITH: Do you know who they were?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: I only saw one or two stand by who would not get in. Whether they afterwards left them I can not say, but I saw one or two women refuse to get in on that account.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you see any woman get in and then get out because her husband was not with her?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: No, I do not think I did. I saw one lady where they had to sort of pull her away from her husband, he insisting upon her going to the boat and she did not want to go.

SENATOR SMITH (interposing): Pardon me a moment. How many were put into this second boat?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: I did not know at the time of the lowering, but as I happened to be a passenger later on, they were counted and there were exactly 20 women, 1 quartermaster, 1 sailor, and 1 stowaway that made his appearance after we had been out about an hour.

MAJ. PEUCHEN : Puis je suis ressorti et j’ai aidé à faire monter les femmes dans le canot. Nous sommes ensuite allés au canot suivant et nous avons fait la même chose — nous avons sorti le mât et la voile de là. Il y avait un quartier-maître dans le canot, et un marin, et nous avons commencé à faire monter les dames dans ce canot. Une fois que ce canot a eu un effectif complet de dames, il n’y avait plus de dames à embarquer, ou s’il y avait d’autres dames à embarquer, elles ne voulaient pas le faire, parce que nous les appelions — c’est-à-dire, en parlant du côté bâbord —, mais certaines ne voulaient pas quitter leur mari.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Savez-vous de qui il s’agissait?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Je n’ai vu qu’une ou deux qui ne seraient pas montées. Je ne sais pas si elles les ont quittés par la suite, mais j’ai vu une ou deux femmes refuser d’y monter.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITHI : Avez-vous vu une femme entrer et sortir parce que son mari n’était pas avec elle?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Non, je ne crois pas. J’ai vu une dame que l’on devait en quelque sorte l’éloigner de son mari, qui insistait pour qu’elle aille dans le canot et qui ne voulait pas y aller.
Ce canot a ensuite été abaissé, et quand il est devenu -
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH (interposition) : Excusez-moi un instant. Combien d’entre eux ont été placés dans ce deuxième canot?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Je ne le savais pas au moment de l’abaissement, mais comme il se trouve que je suis un passager embarqué plus tard, ils ont été comptés et il y avait exactement 20 femmes, 1 quartier-maître un marin et un passager clandestin qui a fait son apparition après que nous ayons été dehors depuis environ une heure.
